With awards season well underway (Grammys, BAFTAs, BRITs, Golden Globes, Oscars) we're reminded what an important role the "glam squad" play in getting a star ready for their moment. Y'know the moment when a gazillion eyes gaze upon, critique, and thumbs up/down the ever so carefully selected ensemble.
When it comes to your house, the "glam squad" are probably more likely to be wearing a tool belt than this season's most gorgeous Gucci gown. Much of the work tradies do isn't glamorous (um hello, cleaning a drain anyone) but is essential for your home to function and have its own moment in spotlight (although admittedly the audience will be a little smaller).
Today we talk painters; what to look for and how to choose a great one. Painters are the make up artists of the tradie "glam squad". They work wonders with boring plasterboard and weathered timber; repairing and resurfacing the dodgy bits, layering on primer and undercoats, dazzling with fine brushwork and finishing it all off with some beautiful colours. Alas, much of their work never makes it to the red carpet to elicit the oohs and ahhs it richly deserves.
Before choosing a painter have a think about the scope of your job. Do you need a quick freshen up before selling your home? Are you after the whole shebang- a full interior or exterior repaint? Or a fancy feature wall (yes, they still exist ;)? The painter you choose needs to understand and fit in with the scope of your project.
Also consider the level of finish you are after. Do you have lots of tricky period details? Or a surface which needs a heap of prep work? Nutting out these two things (scope and finish) along with a rough budget, will help you target the kind of painter you are after. Are you aiming for an Oscar worthy job or will a Burbank Film Festival situation do?
Just like a fab make up artist, word of mouth is a super way to track down an excellent painter. Ask your friends, family or neighbours for a recommendation, and go for a look-see at their final result. You can also track down painters in your area through paint brands such as Dulux. Or through an industry body like the Masters Painters Victoria. We're looking for experience (tick), professionalism (yes!), super workmanship (or workwomanship) and next level customer service (polite, on time and can clean up after oneself).
Painting your house can be expensive and of course you want a great result which lasts a whole lot longer than a face of makeup. So when selecting a painter, a licence and insurance is a MUST! Your best friend's cousin's sister's boyfriend might do an awesome job but you need to know if something were to go awry, you have some recourse.
Once you've put together a list of possible painters, get them to come and quote your job. Talk them through the scope and the level of finish you need, be clear about your expectations. Ok, some peoples eyes start to glaze over at this point. Kind of like the 3 hour Oscar broadcast you have to watch before they f-i-n-a-l-l-y announce Best Picture. But it's so necessary to discuss the job with them in detail, preparation is key here, friends! Chat with them about the kind of prep work the job will need. What type of products will be used? How many coats of paint will be applied? Who will do the work (sometimes painters work with a crew or subcontract)? Who will move furniture around? How long will the project take? Is there a warranty? Discuss payment terms and compare the quotes. And abso-freakin-lutely ask for samples of their work so you can go and check em out.
And our hot tip, to get the best result? Be there while the painting is happening. Not in a meddling-mother-in-law way, just in a I'm-interested-in-what's-happening-and-how-this-all-works way. If you can't be there (life is busy, huh?) make a time to catch up with your painter everyday. Check out their progress and make sure you are happy with the finish.
And finish we will. With a brand new member added to your tradie "glam squad", we await your home's moment in the spotlight. We'll be front row, our oohs and ahhs at the ready. Can't wait to see who wins Best Painter this year!
